The images in this series come from a scrapyard at the edge of NY Harbor, near my studio.
Places like this are now off-limits. At the time, I was free to roam and found inspiration in the endless mountains of utilitarian form slowly returning to its element. The palette was severely restricted to oxides, indigo and black with only hints of accent color.

The spectacular intricacy of these subjects fascinated and haunted me. Dead animals lie still and don't try to escape an analytical gaze. But they assume personality in the eye of the observer.
The bird series is titled, in part, after the characters of Jesus, Peter, Pilate and the two thieves from the text of the Saint Matthew Passion.

This series began as pencil sketches back in the '80s: drapery study that evolved into personality study. Large drawings in black & white, striped in red. The subject matter speaks of individual personality; they function as a sort of dramatis personae, a cast of female characters posing either as aspects of a single personality or a group of
different women.
They are unified by the theme of the regular stripes of red, a some what feminist idea. These objects slouch and twist and struggle. The paintings are named for the Pleiades;
the drawings are imaginary characters.

Origami, folded paper forms, cardboard models, ideas for sculpture: this work is the purely conceptual aspect of some very pragmatic design work I was doing for my day-job at the time.
The circular studies were mutable, each variation captured in time by film. The sculptural ideas were a bit of a reach considering my resources, but they remain a possibility.

After the stolid formality of the painting series that went before, these tiny studies were a relief and signalled a loosening of expression and submission to the inherent accidental qualities of the medium.

The installation would involve a hand-drawn map of the northern hemisphere across which the individual paintings would be displayed. The students would be encouraged to pinpoint and flag each one, as well as locations of their own choosing.

After several trips across the continent, I had amassed a collection of slides showing an assortment of locales throughout the US. It intrigued me to discern the commonalities and differences among them. What makes a place recognizable; what landmarks or natural phenomena? Or is it a quality of light?
Each view is painted on an identical small canvas in traditional horizontal landscape format and surrounded by a gold frame. Each is labeled with its longitude & latitude (as accurately as was possible to do in a pre-GPS world). The project developed into a proposal for an exhibit in which middle-school students would create a simple outline wall map of North America and pinpoint the specific places, as well as places of their own choosing.

A transitional period of breaking out of the restraints of realism and a change from watercolor to heavier media (oil & acrylic), these works are energetic and colorful.
Most are quite tiny. They are studies in the sense that they functioned to explore new technical territory; but surprisingly, they stand on their own despite the small scale.
The subject matter comprises a lot of biological, even anatomical material. There
are bodies and body parts, plant life and the bridge to Valhalla.

The Statue of Liberty is practically in my backyard; I have seen it every day in every weather, season and time of day. My father saw it as a young boy when he first arrived in the US by boat.
An American icon, recognized globally for better or for worse, its form inspired this theme and variations, mainly explorations of color. It's special symbolic significance is augmented by these variations. The series never evolved beyond an elementary figure / ground study, but became the impetus for later serial work.

A collection of small prints from the time we had a press in the studio.
My partner and I were the happy owners of a small Vandercook proofing press.
I began to realize the utility of printing the same image in series with slight variations,
as a way of showing change—in this case, the suggestion of motion by moving the
plate in sequential impressions.
